Morph Tales, the game for future AI champions

In Morph Tales – Discovering Artificial Intelligence, everything revolves around a young, studious artificial intelligence called Morph. She dreams of being able to one day take part in a Mars mission as a research assistant. But before she can do so, she has to pass the tricky entrance exam for Morphtopia, the campus for upcoming AI talent. Without a human exam coach, however, this is a hopeless undertaking for Morph – only humans are capable of teaching young AIs about what type of behaviour is desirable and advisable.

This is where you come in. As Morph’s new trainer, you’ll help her master a number of challenges on a varied test course. For example, you will help her recognise weeds in a field and reduce the use of fertilisers and pesticides; independently steer a sailing boat and take over from the captain under complex weather conditions; filter out novel molecules for promising drugs in the laboratory; or independently take samples on distant planets and search for alien life.

The game, developed by Game Technology Center and the AI Center of ETH Zurich, is designed as a playful introduction to artificial intelligence for young people. It focuses not only on imparting knowledge and motivating them to study a STEM discipline, but also addresses ethical issues. What characterises a reliable AI that always generates comprehensible results?

At the Digital Days, ETH Zurich will present a sneak preview of the mini-game Drug Design – one of four mini-games that make up the Morph Tales - Discovering Artificial Intelligence test course. The game is played with an iPad and uses Augmented Reality (AR) to combine the real world with the virtual game world in a novel gaming experience. The game will be officially launched in 2023.
